STAMPED & STAINED CONCRETE IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY

Spencer’s Outdoor Solutions installs decorative stamped concrete and acid-stained concrete across Grant, Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties. Slate, brick, and stone-textured patterns for patios, walkways, and pool decks. Integral color, surface stains, and a sealed finish that holds up against Northern Kentucky UV and freeze-thaw. The same concrete that holds up under traffic, dressed for an outdoor living space.

WHAT SPENCER'S BUILDS

What's the Difference Between Stamped and Stained Concrete?

PATTERNS, COLORS, AND ACID-STAINED FINISHES

Stamped concrete is poured the same way as a standard slab, then textured with patterned stamps while the concrete is still plastic. Slate, ashlar slate, English cobble, and running-bond brick are the common picks for Northern Kentucky homes. Integral color mixed into the truck gives the slab a base tone; a surface release color hits the high spots to create the depth that makes a stamped slab look like real stone.

Acid-stained concrete works differently. The slab is poured smooth, cured, then acid-stained with reactive chemicals that produce mottled, organic color variation. Acid stain reads more like natural stone than stamped concrete and works on both new pours and existing slabs. Spencer’s seals every decorative pour to protect color from UV and weather.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

STAMPED & STAINED CONCRETE QUESTIONS

Stamped concrete is poured the same way as any concrete slab, then textured with patterned stamps while the concrete is still workable. The stamps press a pattern (slate, brick, stone) into the surface, and a release color is dusted over the high spots to create depth. Done well, a stamped concrete patio looks like real stone at a fraction of the per-square-foot cost of pavers or flagstone.
Acid-stained concrete is treated with a reactive chemical solution that produces mottled, translucent color variation across the slab. Unlike paint or surface dye, acid stain chemically bonds with the concrete and won’t peel or flake. It works on new pours and existing slabs, and produces an organic look similar to natural stone. Acid stain is sealed after application to lock in the color.
Stamped concrete is most popular for patios, pool decks, walkways, and entry stoops. It also works on driveways for an upgraded look. The pattern depth has a non-slip quality that broom finish doesn’t fully match, which is part of why pool decks are a common choice. Indoor stamped applications are less common; acid stain is usually the better indoor choice.
Stamped concrete in Northern Kentucky lasts 25 to 30 years structurally, like any properly poured slab. The decorative finish (color, sealer) needs renewing roughly every 3 to 5 years. Resealing brings back the depth of color and protects the surface from UV fade and freeze-thaw damage. Spencer’s customers who reseal on schedule keep stamped patios looking fresh for decades.
Most stamped patterns have enough surface texture to provide good traction when wet. Pool deck patterns specifically are designed for slip resistance. For extra grip, a non-slip additive can be mixed into the sealer at application. Spencer’s recommends the right pattern and sealer combination based on whether the slab serves a pool, an entry, or general patio use.
Yes, acid stain works on existing concrete that is structurally sound and free of paint, sealer, or curing compound. Spencer’s evaluates the existing slab at the estimate visit. If the surface is compatible, the slab is cleaned, etched, stained, and sealed. If the existing concrete is failing or already coated, the better path is usually tear-out and a fresh stained pour.
Stamped and stained concrete carry a higher per-square-foot cost than standard broom-finish work but cost less than installing pavers or flagstone. Pricing depends on slab size, pattern complexity, color choice, and whether the work includes tear-out of existing concrete.
